it's been pretty quiet around here these days. aubrey was out of town for a couple and so it was just the little birdie and i, here alone, in this oddly still and mellow house. the morning time is my favorite. the bright and early streams of light shining through every window. waking up fresh and rested. birds chirping, dogs sun bathing, hens clucking and the smug cat snoozing on the chair in the corner. neighbors getting into their cars and heading to work, mama's running down the street behind jogging strollers and the delivery trucks making their rounds. the blond bed headed little girl who is sweet as honey and likes to cuddle on the couch after a long night of sleep and missing her mama. i prepared some maple and brown sugar oatmeal for breakfast with a side of sliced bananas. birdie calls them "ma-nas." as you can imagine or as you may have experienced yourself, mixing oatmeal and almost two-year-olds is an icky sticky mess. nothing that a quick splash in the kitchen sink can't handle. after a good toweling off and some fresh clean clothes we went out to do the morning chores. just like every morning we fed the pups, watered the garden and plucked those thieving caterpillars off of our dill. i need to come up with a plan to deter them. we tended to our chickens and watered our potted plants. birdie splashed in her buckets and said hello to the squirrels.
the heat and the mosquitoes and need for another change of clothes for gemma bird brought us back into the cool house. we listened to records, we colored on paper. before i knew it, it was time to prepare her little lunch. she ate, we laughed, i tucked her in for her nap.
a good morning, just she and me. and while she slept, i snacked and did some things that i don't often get a chance to do like flip through a magazine and doing a bit of reading from a new book while resting on the couch and enjoying this rare quietude.
