merry christmas a day late! we had an amazing christmas and hopefully you all did too. my ex-husbands parents came to spend the holiday with us which was awesome! it was really nice to see them. the kids were of course super excited and gemma bird thinks that christmas is pretty neato. she had a blast opening presents and playing with her new toys. we baked cookies all day christmas eve. we now have way too many cookies in our house... molasses cookies, ginger bread men and sugar cookies. they are so good which makes them a little dangerous. i can't stop eating them.aubrey and i were up until 3am wrapping presents and of course the kids woke up, ready to go at 6:30 christmas morning. they scored big time this year... julian received a record player and a small record collection, plum received a drum set (second guessing that decision now...our poor ears) and birdie received a cardboard play house along with some other really great things.
it was fah-reezing here in texas, which i am bittersweet about. it was so cold and gloomy that it felt a little more like christmas as opposed to a sunshiny day like we experience most years, but it made it difficult to heat the downstairs floor of our 1920's house. i didn't take a ton of photos this year. we were busy enjoying the holiday and spending time with family but here are a few moments that i did manage to capture on film...
i'm always a little sad when christmas is over. it's such an amazing time of the year. i'll keep most of our decorations up until the new year, but i always feel a little bummed when it comes time to pack them all up and store them away. next stop new years!!! can't wait! xo.
this gift guide was sponsored by modcloth. i picked up lots of stocking stuffers and other small gifts for loved ones from their brilliant apartment section this year and i am just smitten over that cocktail dress. it's perfect for new years if you ask me.
milla's birthday was last thursday. she went on record to say that this was THE BEST birthday she has ever had. just between you and i... she says this every year. ;) i snapped a few photos of her birthday morning. we brought her the usual birthday breakfast in bed (she requested blueberry pancakes this year) and opened presents.
funny story about the presents... as i have shared before, we always set up the kids birthday gifts on their bedroom floor in the middle of the night while they're sleeping. that way in the morning they wake up and see all of their packages. this year while i was setting up plum's presents, around 2:30am, she woke up! ahhhh.... this has never happened before in all of both julian and milla's years. i saw her smiling a smile as big as the sun as i came in to place her very last present on her floor. "oh... you're awake?!!" i said. "i know, i don't know why." milla said back to me. "look at all my presents! they look so pretty." she said. "i see them. but you should not. you should be sleeping miss plum." we talked for a bit about how it was going to be nearly impossible for her to fall back to sleep now that she was wide awake with excitement. i told her a story about how i had a similar experience on christmas when i was little and woke up at 4am. i peeked to see if santa had come. he had and i quickly ran to my mothers room and tried to drag her out of bed but she told me to go back to sleep. i told her that it was so hard for me and that i was awake for what seemed like hours, but i eventually fell back to sleep until morning time. i gave her the ipad and let her watch a movie so she could fall back to sleep, which she did.
at 6:30 am we got up and made her breakfast and had a successful birthday morning...
it was quite a lovely ninth birthday! on saturday we had her party. she wanted to have a slumber party so we set up the tee pee and made the living room special for her and her friends... she wanted a red velvet cake, which i happily baked for her, and carrot soup and different sandwiches. grilled cheese, grilled cheese with tomato, pb & j and cream cheese and cucumber.
